What Is Noise?

THE CONCEPT

White noise contains every frequency at equal energy — the audio equivalent of white light. Unlike a pitched oscillator, there is no fundamental, no harmonics, no repeating cycle. Every sample is a completely independent random value. The oscilloscope shows a dense, irregular fuzz with no discernible pattern. The frequency spectrum is flat — all frequencies present, all at the same level. On its own, noise is chaotic. But filtered, shaped with an envelope, and layered with tonal elements, it becomes the breath of a flute, the body of a snare, or the shimmer of a cymbal.

Press Play and listen to raw white noise. Watch the oscilloscope — notice how it looks completely different from any waveform you've seen before. There's no repeating shape, no cycle, no pitch. The flat spectrum diagram shows why: every frequency from 20 Hz to 20 kHz is present at roughly the same level. Adjust the GAIN knob to control the volume.
