The ADSR Envelope

THE CONCEPT

An envelope controls how a parameter changes over time when you play a note. ADSR stands for Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release. Attack: how long it takes to reach full volume. Decay: how long it falls to the sustain level. Sustain: the level held while the key is held. Release: how long it fades after the key is released.

TRY IT

Press the trigger button and watch the envelope shape. Adjust each stage and hear how it changes the feel of the sound — from a sharp pluck to a slow swell.

THINGS TO NOTICE
Short attack + short decay = plucky, percussive sounds.
Long attack = slow swell, pad-like sounds.
Zero sustain = the sound dies even while the key is held.
Long release = the sound fades slowly after you let go.
